The End è una chiamata internazionale per progetti realizzati con qualsiasi mezzo artistico, a cura del critico e curatore statunitense Gean Moreno. Cosa costituisce la nuova idea della 'Fine' e quali forme visive è in grado di generare nel nostro momento storico particolarmente turbolento?
In passato l’idea della fine era accettata con semplicità, tutto sarebbe finito e basta. Nella cultura popolare l’anno previsto per la fine era il 2012. L'immaginazione apocalittica avrebbe finalmente visto soddisfatte le sue profezie e il Libro delle Rivelazioni non sarebbe più stato solamente una serie di pagine. Ma raramente la fine si riferisce veramente alla fine, ancora meno in questi giorni. Il 2012 è iniziato con un'ondata di tensioni sociali - la primavera araba e la proliferazione delle occupazioni territoriali - e questo ci costringe ad immaginare la fine in modo più complesso. Da qualche parte, George Steiner ha scritto che siamo figli di un'epoca autunnale. Sembra che siamo destinati alla fine e all'esaurimento. Ma ora sembra che l’insoddisfazione generale abbia raggiunto il punto di ebollizione. Grazie all'elettricità che c'è nell'aria, la nostra immaginazione storica collettiva può riconfigurarsi. L'idea della fine può ora prendere strade diverse, elaborare intersezioni inaspettate. Si può ancora fare qualcosa per fermare il corso della dissoluzione e della catastrofe.
E' vero che la visione di un pianeta bruciato ancora esercita la sua seduzione agghiacciante, il cataclisma ha sempre il suo fascino. Ma la fine è ormai, anche, uno spazio per nuove aperture critiche. Le cose vanno demolite per costruire di nuovo sulle rovine, per provare modi migliori di vivere insieme, di stabilire una scommessa su un futuro diverso. L'idea di fondo si presta sempre più ad un'ampia gamma di programmi.
Più che semplici raffigurazioni apocalittiche o progetti di attivisti del momento, quello che mi interessa veramente sono accostamenti diversi, sintesi bizzarre, mutazioni inspiegabili tra l'idea seducente della distruzione e i processi immaginativi di rinnovamento. Pensate a colonie utopiche che vivono in una discarica. Pensate alle Pantere Nere che operano su una discarica, come Godard in One Plus One (Sympathy for the Devil). Pensate alle terre desolate, occupate, di Beckett, illuminate da file e file di tende e il suono di tamburi stonati. Pensate a Mad Max rivisitato come la storia dei comunardi arrabbiati di Oakland. Pensate a T.S. Eliot che scrive da Madrid o Tahrir Square. Per essere concisi, i progetti selezionati per questa mostra orbiteranno intorno ad una riconfigurazione fantasiosa dell'idea della fine come una cosa equivoca, scivolosa, sfuggente, ma stimolante, gravida di potenziali nuovi e inaspettati, cupa e luminosa allo stesso tempo.

THEME
Once, the notion of the end traded in simplicity. Things
were over. In popular culture, 2012 was its year. The apocalyptic imagination would finally find its prophesies fulfilled. The Book of Revelations was leaving the page. But of course the end is rarely about the end, and it seems to be much less so these days. 2012 was ushered in by a wave of social unrest--the Arab Spring and the proliferation of Occupations--and this may just force us to imagine the idea of endings in more complicated ways. Somewhere George Steiner wrote that we are the children of an autumnal age. Endings and exhaustion should be our things. But now it seems that, with the upswell of dissatisfaction boiling into action, with the electricity that’s in the air, our collective historical imagination has been given an opportunity to reconfigure itself. The idea of the end may now take different routes, flesh out unexpected intersections. It can still mark the course of dissolution and disaster. Visions of a scorched planet still harbor their chilling seduction. Cataclysm always has its charms. But the end is now, also, a space of critical gateways. Things are torn down to build anew on the ruins, to test better ways of living together, to lay a bet on a different kind of future. The idea of the end lends itself increasingly to a broader range of programs.
More than straight apocalyptic depictions or bushy-tailed activist projects, what I’m really interested in are strange juxtapositions, weird syntheses, inexplicable mutations between the seductive drive of destruction and imaginative processes of renewal. Think utopian colonies living in a landfill. Think the Black Panthers operating out of a junkyard, as in Godard’s One Plus One (Sympathy for the Devil). Think Beckett’s wastelands occupied, brightened by rows and rows of tents and grating drum circles. Think Mad Max remade as the story of Oakland’s angry communards. Think T.S. Eliot reporting from Madrid or Tahrir Square. Think, of course, beyond any of these examples, dazzle with weirdness. To be concise, the projects selected for this exhibition will orbit around an imaginative reconfiguration of the idea of the end as an equivocal, slippery, elusive, but inspiring thing, pregnant with new and unexpected potentials, bleak and bright at the same time.
